One of a kind - Eco friendly artwork on a board that was destined for landfill - transformed into a stunning statement piece of contemporary artwork. To work on a surf board that has seen the waves, experienced the flow of energy as it glides through each breaking wave, knowing the ocean and holding onto memories that once gave someone that sense of stillness and exhilarating freedom. I wanted to enhance this feeling, bringing a fresh take on the use of the surf board - from water to wall - instead of being sent off to landfill, I decided to bring it back to life.

From this, came the question of, what is underneath? - whilst people surf the surface, below lies a whole eco system - I wanted to create awareness of those creatures that exist in the depths below.

Set against a deep, luminous blue that shifts from the dappled surface reflecting through to rich dark depths, the scene is teeming with life; A vibrant golden - orange octopus sits gracefully at the nose of the board, painted in a textured and expressive form with exquisite close up details moves on to a striking lionfish, spreading feathery fins, basking in its beautiful brown sepia tones. Bright clownfish - each with their own expressions and personalities scatter in detail around the board adding a sense of community submerged between corals and vibrant anemones. Wise sea turtles represent clarity and tranquillity, one rests among the reef displaying beautiful green shades whilst the other serenely glides through the ocean baring earth tones and marked with intricate natural patterns. Delicate jellyfish drift weightlessly through the currents, painted and blended in harmonious pink, lilacs and blues to create a vibrant yet transparent approach to truly depict these curious creatures, trailing translucent tentacles that catch the light shining through from above.

Drawing from the fragile beauty of coral reefs - some of Earth's most vibrant ecosystems - this piece was designed to celebrate how these creatures rely on one another - creating a community and partnership - pairing this with the use of a reclaimed surfboard instead of a canvas ties the art directly to the ocean itself; honouring the joy of surfing, while shining a light on the underwater habitats that make our coastlines so special. It is a reminder that every wave hides a whole world underneath, and that we share the sea with so many incredible organisms

Measures 6ft in length and can be displayed with board hooks or on a narrow lipped shelf - This board is for indoor use only and has a finishing varnish layer for gloss and protection - keep out of direct sunlight for best viewing.

Available for collection only - from the HLS Ocean Art gallery inside the Artisans Emporium in Newquay, Cornwall.

Please note - this is a used surf board, reclaimed and saved from landfill - this board is unfit to be used in water - please do not surf on this piece of artwork - it has been painted and created for display only - the board has visible wear and tear which also adds to the character and story behind the piece.
